Last Summer (2008) we purchased a 5,100 sq. ft., three-story, 150 year old Victorian house in Northern Westchester. The oil-fired baseboard heating system was worn out and in need of replacement. We decided that in addition to replacing the heating system, we also wanted to replace the air conditioning window units in use throughout the house with a central air conditioning system. We received various opinions and estimates to do the job but ultimately decided to go with a new forced air Geothermal heating and air conditioning system from Earthlinked, installed by Jose Romero and the Specialist Air Conditioning and Heating Company. Jose recommended and installed a direct-exchange horizontal loop system with conventional duct work on our first floor and a high velocity, or mini duct system, on the second and third floors. We also installed a de-super heater providing hot water on demand. The incremental cost of going with a Geothermal system relative to the more traditional gas or oil-fired system was about 10% - 15%.
Our first winter in the house with the new heating system was very comfortable and the system worked extremely well. We have no oil and or gas bill. We have seen a very reasonable increase in our monthly electric bill. Being an older Victorian style house, the house has large windows and is not well insulated. Having just moved from a smaller version of this house with an oil-fired water based heating system, I was very familiar with the costs of heating a house of this size and vintage with oil. I estimate that our costs of heating our house last winter were approximately half of what they would have been had we used an oil-fired system. Now that summer has just begun, we look forward to using this same system to cool our house. I expect the savings in the cooling mode to be even greater when compared to using window units (the way we used to cool our house) since the system runs even more efficiently in the cooling mode.
Jose’s team from the Specialist Air Conditioning and Heating Company are professional, courteous, quiet, and very neat. On the few occasions that we have needed to contact Jose’ since the initial installation, he and his team have responded within hours and been on-site within a day, most often the same day, to examine any issue. Jose’ is very accessible and responds promptly.
